Monetary circulation in South-West Russia is already formed in the IV-V centuries of our era, in the Northern districts it arose later, in the IX century. At first widely used silver dirhams of the Arab Caliphate and other middle Eastern coins. Since the beginning of the XI century, the Abbasids gradually giving way to Western European denarii, also widely start to be used English, French and German coins.
The circulation of foreign coins is terminated at the end of the eleventh century, most likely due to the lower carat silver. They are replaced by silver ingots, lasted until the middle of the XIV century. In the Ryazan Principality in this period addressed the dirhams of the Golden Horde.

Almost all Russian treasures, Dating from the XII - first half of XIV centuries, are composed exclusively of bars of silver of different shapes. This allows to make a conclusion about the absence in this period of circulation of coins in large areas of Russia. Silver then came probably from Europe, and then melted down into ingots.
It was during this period, called "Coinless", the feudal disunity, and the various principalities were made ingots of a certain shape and weight. In the South, the ingot was hexagonal and weighed about 164 grams (called "Kiev hryvnia") in the North - a wand length of about 20 cm and a weight of 196 grams (called "Novgorod hryvnia"). Also in the treasure meet "Lithuanian hryvnia", repeating the shape of Novgorod, but different weight. In addition, significantly less likely to get "Chernihiv", "Volga" and others of the hryvnia. The word "hryvnia" - old Slavonic, meaning a decoration worn around the neck (later - a measure of weight).
At the end of the XIII century in Novgorod ingots reduced sample, but the size and weight are saved. The development of trade leads to division of hryvnia into two parts ("poltinas"). Perhaps it was then and there the word "ruble". There is no exact information, whether shared bars in more parts (across clades only poltinas).
In Coinless period is widely used and various substitutes for money - animal skins, cowrie shells and more.
