Monument to Nicholas I was created between 1856 and 1859 by the architect A. Montferrand. Massive equestrian statue weighing 21 tons (work of P. K. Klodt) is set on a high stone pedestal with four bas-reliefs and allegorical sculptures representing the power, wisdom, justice and faith (sculptor - R. K. salemann). This is the first in Europe dedicated to the horse sculpture rests only on the hind legs, which gives a special ease and rapidity.
