Nicholas II, son of Alexander III, ascended the throne on October 21 (November 3 new style), 1894. The coronation took place a year and a half, in may, 1896. Traditionally the event was held at the Cathedral square of the Moscow Kremlin. The Emperor and his wife Alexandra (married 3 weeks after the beginning of the reign) came out of the faceted chamber, down through the Red gate and went to the Uspensky Cathedral, where the procedure of confirmation. This was the last coronation in the history of Russia and the largest. On Khodynka field was organized folk festivals with free distribution of food. There was a stampede, which according to different data were lost from 2 to 4 thousand people. This event some people said it was a bad omen and associate it with further turmoil in the country.
