The battle took place 12 (24 new style) of October, 1812 near the town of Maloyaroslavets in 120 kilometers from Moscow in the direction of Kaluga. Because of the constant guerrilla ambushes and the poor state of the army in October, Napoleon decided to leave Moscow and move to Smolensk for the winter. It was decided to go through Kaluga.
