Description of coin 5 rubles 2012 "The battle of Smolensk. Patriotic war of 1812":

The obverse of the coin to the left of the center, specified value: a large figure "5" under the word "РУБЛЕЙ" Below the horizontal inscription "БАНК РОССИИ" which date is "2012". On the right side there is a stylized plant branch, near which is a mark of the Moscow mint (consists of letters "ММД". On the left, near Kant is one small part of a floral ornament.

The reverse of the coin depicts the monument to the heroes of Patriotic war 1812 in Smolensk. On a circle the inscription: top - "СМОЛЕНСКОЕ СРАЖЕНИЕ" below - "ОТЕЧЕСТВЕННАЯ ВОЙНА 1812 ГОДА"(labels separated by dots).

The obverse and reverse sides have a protruding on the circumference of the piping.

The battle took place on 4-6 (16-18, new style) of August 1812, and became one of the first major battles in world war II. He commanded the Russian army, Barclay de Tolly, a supporter of further retreat to Moscow, but under the influence of the generals, it was decided to give battle to the French. The city held two days, but then left. In this battle were about equal losses, and the morale of Napoleon's army dropped significantly.
