The coin is issued on 4 may 2000 in honor of the 55th anniversary of the Victory. The series consists of 7 coins, each one dedicated to one of the hero cities. In 2017, the series was complemented by two more coins (Kerch and Sevastopol).
The battle of Stalingrad was one of the largest and most important in the great Patriotic war, it was the first significant victory over the Nazis. Stalingrad (now Volgograd) was awarded the title of hero-city on 1 may 1945, but the official status was approved only for the 20th anniversary of the Victory.
