Sevastopol is a separate subject of the Russian Federation. The first mention of the city dates back to antiquity, when here was founded the city of Chersonese, the ruins of which have survived to our time. In Ancient Rus it was the sea gate to Byzantium, and the city was called Korsun. In 988 Vladimir the Great had been here for a symbolic baptism of the locals, which was the impetus for the subsequent universal Baptism of Rus and the establishment of the Orthodox state. During the Crimean and great Patriotic war, residents of Sevastopol have shown resilience and courage, defending the city from invaders. On 8 may 1965, Sevastopol was awarded the title hero City.
