Is the only subject of the Russian Federation with the status of Autonomous region. The administrative center is the town of Birobidzhan. The region's territory is hilly and almost entirely covered with forests. Was established on 7 may 1934 for compact living resettled here by the Jewish population. In the future it was planned to convert the area into a Republic, but the project was not supported by Stalin. In the 90 years due to the low standard of living most of the Jews left for Israel and now they make up only 1 percent of the population of the region, creating ongoing discussions about the possibility of merging the region with neighboring.
