Nenets Autonomous Okrug is a part of the Arkhangelsk region, but also has some independence. Its administrative center is the town of Naryan-Mar. To the North is the coast of the Arctic ocean, on the South side it borders with the Republic of Komi and the Arkhangelsk oblast, in the East on Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The entire territory lies in the tundra zone and has a very low population density (less only in the Chukotka AO). District was formed July 15, 1929. The indigenous population of the Nenets lead a nomadic lifestyle and reindeer breeding.
