The obverse of the coin is divided into two parts (upper approximately in 2 times more low). Each piece is framed with a solid line. In the upper part of the emblem of the USSR of the sample of 1956 with 15 bands of the tape (number of republics). The coat of arms is simplified and has no inscriptions on the ribbon. Left and right of the emblem there is an inscription "СССР" divided into two parts ("СС"and "СР". The letters are arranged in a semicircle, skirting the crest. At the bottom of the obverse in the middle is the denomination - a large number "10", underneath, in smaller font the word "РУБЛЕЙ"
In the foreground of the reverse shows basketball players at the time of the casting ball in the basket, in the background the building that hosted the basketball competitions. Under the foot of one of the athletes is a sign of the mint (LMD - Leningrad). On the right - the emblem of the Olympic games-80, at the top along the rim, a semicircular inscription stretches "ИГРЫ XXII ОЛИМПИАДЫ" below along the rim inscriptions: "МОСКВА"and "1980", separated by dots. The bottom of the coin near the middle of the piping between the two horizontal lines indicate the year of issue "1979".
On the front and back parts of the coin along the circumference has a raised rim.
