The obverse of the coin is divided into two parts (upper approximately in 2 times more low). Each piece is framed with a solid line. In the upper part of the emblem of the USSR of the sample of 1956 with 15 bands of the tape (number of republics). The coat of arms is simplified and has no inscriptions on the ribbon. Left and right of the emblem there is an inscription "СССР" divided into two parts ("СС"and "СР". The letters are arranged in a semicircle, skirting the crest. At the bottom of the obverse in the middle is the denomination - a large numeral "5" under it, in smaller font the word "РУБЛЕЙ"
The reverse depicts the main sights of Tallinn (Estonian SSR), surrounded by a fortified wall. In the foreground depicts a stylized water surface, and on it, two sailing boats (during the Olympic games of 1980 in this city, started a sailing regatta). To the left of the boat lettering "ТАЛЛИН" slightly below - the mint mark (LMD - Leningrad). Horizontally near the bottom of the edging and the year of issue coins - 1977. Above the picture there is an emblem of the Olympics-80. Left, above and to the right along the rim are the inscriptions: "ИГРЫ XXII ОЛИМПИАДЫ""МОСКВА"and "1980", separated by dots.
On the front and back parts of the coin along the circumference has a raised rim.
During the Olympics-80 in Tallinn started a sailing regatta on the Baltic sea.
