The obverse of the coin is divided into two parts (upper approximately in 2 times more low). Each piece is framed with a solid line. In the upper part of the emblem of the USSR of the sample of 1956 with 15 bands of the tape (number of republics). The coat of arms is simplified and has no inscriptions on the ribbon. Left and right of the emblem there is an inscription "СССР" divided into two parts ("СС"and "СР". The letters are arranged in a semicircle, skirting the crest. At the bottom of the obverse in the middle is the denomination - a large numeral "5" under it, in smaller font the word "РУБЛЕЙ"
In the foreground of the reverse depicts a horseman on a horse, overcoming an obstacle. Behind him is the emblem of the Olympics-80, in the upper part is the Racecourse. At the top, left and right along the rim, a semicircular inscription stretches "ИГРЫ XXII ОЛИМПИАДЫ""МОСКВА"and "1980", separated by dots. The bottom of the coin there is the year of issue "1978", and underneath it the mint's mark (LMD - Leningrad).
On the front and back parts of the coin along the circumference has a raised rim.
