The first stone Kremlin in Moscow appeared in the times of Dmitry Donskoy, replacing the wooden fortifications. In the future, the Kremlin's territory was expanding, and at the end of XV - beginning of XVI century the old walls were replaced with new, built of brick on white stone base. In the XVIII-XIX centuries the territory was reconstructed several times, was also added tents to towers and some elements of the architecture of the walls (including decorative prongs). Only since the late nineteenth century, the Kremlin became colored in red, before that was white. The Soviet time has left a tangible imprint on the architectural ensemble, many buildings inside were demolished and replaced by a new one.
