The obverse of the coin in the upper part of the disc - the coat of arms of the USSR of the sample of 1956: the hammer and sickle on a globe, beneath the rising sun, at the top a five-pointed star; the sides of the ears of corn, tied with fifteen turns of the tape, the lower stage is much wider, symbolizes the RSFSR (the rest of the coils - the other republics). Under the arms the full width of the coin there is an inscription "СССР" below is the value: a large stylized number "1" under which a semicircle along the edge to the floor "РУБЛЬ" even the small numbers below the year of issue "1988".
The reverse of the coin in the foreground vividly depicts bust portrait of Gorky from the front. The writer behind the sea during a storm over the wave soars the stormy Petrel. In the left part of the coin along the rim, a semicircular inscription from the bottom up: «А.М.ГОРЬКИЙ 1868·1936»(separated by a bird's wing).
The obverse and reverse of the coin features the speaker on the circumference of the piping.

Peshkov, Aleksey Maksimovich (more known under the pseudonym of Maxim Gorky) (1868-1936) - novelist of the late XIX - early XX centuries. In his works tried to show the lives of the Russian common people and also covertly fought against the Imperial power. Despite the commitment to Communist ideas, did not support the Revolution and went abroad, but soon returned and continued creative activities. In the USSR his works were highly valued, Gorky was considered one of the founders of the Soviet regime. The storm symbolizes his recognition of the "stormy Petrel of the revolution".
