The obverse of the coin in the upper part of the disc - the coat of arms of the USSR of the sample of 1956: the hammer and sickle on a globe, beneath the rising sun, at the top a five-pointed star; the sides of the ears of corn, tied with fifteen turns of the tape, the lower stage is much wider, symbolizes the RSFSR (the rest of the coils - the other republics). Under the arms the full width of the coin there is an inscription "СССР" below is the value: a large stylized number "1" under which a semicircle along the edge to the floor "РУБЛЬ" even below, in smaller numbers, the year of coinage - "1989".
The reverse of the coin depicts a relief portrait of Taras Shevchenko in front, face to the left. At the bottom is a facsimile signature of the poet, to the left years of his life in two lines: "1814" and "1861". In the bottom left of the coin along the rim from the bottom up in a semicircle the inscription: "T. Shevchenko".
The obverse and reverse of the coin features the speaker on the circumference of the piping.

Shevchenko, Taras (1814-1861) - Ukrainian poet, philosopher, artist. In his works showed the oppression of the common people, fought for the abolition of serfdom. Considered a founder of Ukrainian literature, the Creator of the Ukrainian literary language. In the twentieth century, Shevchenko became one of the symbols of Ukraine and its culture.
