The obverse of the coin
in the upper part of the disc - the coat of arms of the USSR of the sample of 1956: the hammer and sickle on a globe, beneath the rising sun, at the top a five-pointed star; the sides of the ears of corn, tied with fifteen turns of the tape, the lower stage is much wider, symbolizes the RSFSR (the rest of the coils - the other republics). Under the arms the full width of the coin there is an inscription "СССР" below is the value: a large stylized number "1" under which a semicircle along the edge to the floor "РУБЛЬ" even the small numbers below the year of issue "1990".The reverse of the coin
depicts a relief portrait of Janis Rainis in front, underneath facsimile signature of the poet, on the right years of his life in two lines: "1865", "1929". In the left part of the field in a semi-circle along the rim up from the bottom is the inscription: "ЯНИС РАЙНИС"

Janis Rainis Latvian national poet, author of plays, translator of famous works in the Latvian language. Engaged in social activities, in the late nineteenth century for anti-government poems was sent into exile, and later emigrated to Switzerland. In 1920 he returned to Latvia, where he continued the struggle for a socialist system.
