The obverse of the coin in the upper part of the disc - the coat of arms of the USSR of the sample of 1956: the hammer and sickle on a globe, beneath the rising sun, at the top a five-pointed star; the sides of the ears of corn, tied with fifteen turns of the tape, the lower stage is much wider, symbolizes the RSFSR (the rest of the coils - the other republics). Under the arms the full width of the coin there is an inscription "СССР" below is the value: a large stylized number "3" under which a semicircle along the edge to the floor "РУБЛЯ" even below, in smaller numbers, the year of coinage - "1989".
On the coin reverse against the background of a stylized image of the mountains is depicted a symbol of support for the Armenian people after the earthquake (many hands supporting the bowl with a burning flame), under it the date of the Spitak earthquake - "7.12.1988", flanked by the symbolic representation of the ruins of buildings. Upstairs along the rim in a semicircle stylized Armenian alphabet font is the inscription: "ЗОНА ЗЕМЛЕТРЯСЕНИЯ МИЛОСЕРДИЯ СОЗИДАНИЯ"(words separated by dots).

Earthquake in the South-West of Armenia took place on 7 December 1988, was of magnitude 7 on the Richter scale.
