Description of coin 5 rubles 1988 "Monument to Peter the great, Leningrad":

The obverse of the coin in the upper part of the disc - the coat of arms of the USSR of the sample of 1956: the hammer and sickle on a globe, beneath the rising sun, at the top a five-pointed star; the sides of the ears of corn, tied with fifteen turns of the tape, the lower stage is much wider, symbolizes the RSFSR (the rest of the coils - the other republics). Under the arms the full width of the coin there is an inscription "СССР" below is the value: a large stylized number "5" under which a semicircle along the edge to the floor "РУБЛЕЙ" even the small numbers below the year of issue "1988".

The reverse of the coin vividly depicts the monument to Peter I (bronze horseman) in Leningrad, to the right the date "1782," on the background panorama of the Neva river from the Peter and Paul fortress. Under the monument a horizontal inscription «ЛЕНИНГРАД» In the upper part of the field a semicircular inscription along the rim the inscription: «ПАМЯТНИК ПЕТРУ ПЕРВОМУ»br />

The bronze horseman is the famous statue of Saint-Petersburg, depicts Peter the great on horseback, mounted on a huge monolith ("Thunder-stone"), found in the vicinity of the city.
